Drawing inspiration from a toy car, British designer Ben Wilson has come up with a pedal-powered vehicle dubbed “Artikcar” that steers by leaning. Designed as part of two parades in Manchester and Edinburgh, organized by Walk the Plank, the recumbent-style bike (or car) is finished in steel tubing, which makes use of bright neon to illuminate the vehicle. The mobile work of art apart from touting a bold style also ensures the safety of the rider.

'c'est lat crise' - a calabash decorated with hand-painted louis vuitton monograms
all images courtesy of sébastien bouchard

developed for a collective exhibition in dakar, senegal, sébastien bouchard's 'c'est la crise' (crisis time) is an artistic response to the current global economic situation.
the calabash, is a bowl made from the calabash tree. it is an object which is commonly used in african culture. every family has its own calabash to carry things, use it in cooking... it is an object which has a price of less than 1€ but is something which everyone uses daily. the idea behind 'c'est la crise' is to elaborate on the significance of this bowl and its use by contrasting it with the iconic louis vuitton monogram which is a symbol of luxury and high-end goods. the juxtaposition of the painted vuitton graphics on the exterior of the calabash result in a confrontation between the necessities of african life and the desires of western life.

french artist morgane tschiember explores illusions of material properties in here series 'iron maiden'. the series of installation pieces was first exhibited in 2007 at galerie loevenbruck in paris, where tschiember lives and works. the installation consists of large scale sheets of lacquered aluminum which are bent and arranged to give the illusion of a much lighter and pliable material. the sheets are arranged on the floor and wall, seemingly bending at the will of gravity. the vivid colours and glossy sheen amplify the surrealism of the pieces.

When was the last time you emphatically broke somthing? The ceramic salt and pepper shaker offers you the opportunity to do it! The product comes in one piece and by breaking it, you make it useful. Breaking is an experience of impulsive outburst, But this time is an act that builds rather than destroys. In a world of products whose shape is completely dictated by the designer, we enable the user to complete the design himself. The event of the breaking leaves its mark on the shaker and gives it its final, unique, one-of-a-kind appearance.

Every camera requires batteries for power but it is not so in the case of Sony ODO digital camera. Check out this Battery Free Camera designed by Sony. This camera is powered by kinetic energy and is charged by giving its rounded head a twist. When its head is rolled, it provides power by transforming kinetic energy into electricity. This device is made up if biodegradable vegetable based plastics and is capable of taking decent pictures. Camera takes around 15 seconds to get charged for next picture. Sony has also offered one flowerpot which acts as the Sony ODO docking system.

Sony's showing off a whole range of new environmentally-friendly gear in Japan at the moment, all of which can be used without ever having to be plugged in for a recharge. One of the more interesting devices of the lot is the Spin N' Snap digital camera (pictured above), which you charge up simply by placing your fingers in the two holes (which also double as a viewfinder) and spinning it around a few times. Taking a slightly different but equally non-power-hungry route is the Crank N' Capture camera, which can also apparently capture video of some sort. Rounding out the line up are the Pull N' Play stereo headphones, the Push POWER Play device (apparently a viewer of some sort), which you charge by rolling it back and forth on a table, and the "Juice Box," which packs a fold out solar panel that can be used to charge your other devices. What's more, if we're reading the machine translation correctly, it appears that all the devices are made of re-used or recycled plastic. Unfortunately, there's no word on when or if any of them will actually be available, although you can check out a couple more pics courtesy of Impress after the break and plenty more at the link below.

Let’s change the minute hand gradually by establishing new plans and goals and carrying them out. Then, let’s reflect and look back on the times that have passed while looking at the trace of time imprinted on the paper of our lives. We might become a person, who makes an exquisite melody in life from a beautiful soul as a result of the impact of viewing time passed in our lives.

Sticker phone is an innovative eco product. It is made of natural polysiloxane, with solar panels installed on the back. Its convex form enable it to be stuck to a window for charging, thus reducing the need for extra mobile phone related products. Simply stick it onto the window to absorb sunlight wherever you are, in the car or at work. Now you no longer have to decide between an elegant multifunctional phone and the ultimate eco phone.

NU.AER is an air cleaner concept for noisy and neon light dominated workplaces such as large offices. The shape of the air cleaner is reminiscent of an open window through which fresh air comes. The cleaning intensity displayed by the illuminated surface can be set by hand using the slider. The illuminated surface also has a therapeutic and relaxing effect. A real window is simulated by these two functions to create a comfortable atmosphere next to each desk.

"The products are designed to be used by blind people, with the exception of 'Rifletti'. The aim was to create objects pleasant to use for people with such disabilities because the objects they usually use can sometimes be really cold and unpleasant. For example: devices made for the blind are primarily based on robotic voices or braille writing. The objects we designed are based on deeper sensations, like the smell of flowers or the sound of leaves in a forest. During the exhibition at Salone Satellite, we let people test our designs, and we realized that everyone enjoyed using objects that can stimulate all senses. This kind of experience helped most people to understand more about blindness."

Shown above is Scented Time, the antithesis of a watch that marks time in a neutral manner, ignoring subjectivity. Sovrapensiero asks, "How long is a moment of pleasure? What is its smell?" Each candle is scented differently and lasts twenty minutes, lighting the next one before the flame goes out. The user decides when the period of time shall begin when the first candle is lit, and thus smells the passage of time.

Kleber Puchaski's Hydrosphere, a small greenhouse solution for growing fresh herbs and salads.

Metin Kaplan's Nevale, a heated and cooled food carrier that allows people to carry "real" meals and avoid less healthy fast food.

The Hydrosphere was one of nine finalists in the Electrolux Design Lab 2006 contest where design students were asked to design household appliances that could contribute to a healthier life style. It's a small greenhouse solution for growing fresh herbs and salads. “A grow lamp is positioned in the middle bottom of a clear glass globe, enabling herbs and small fruits to grow around it. Designer Kleber Puchaski, of the Royal College of Art in the UK, created this concept to make natural ingredients readily available in the home.”. The contest grand prize winner was the Nevale – a heated and cooled food carrier that allows people to carry "real" meals and avoid less healthy fast food. Created by Metin Kaplan, a student at Istanbul Technical University, Turkey, he was inspired by traditional Middle East sefertasi food containers. More after the jump.

This year's Electrolux Design Lab competition winners will be officially announced tomorrow at the International Forum on Design and the Environment in Paris. As they have since the global competition began, Electrolux asked design students to come up with innovative household appliances for the future. That the designs be energy- and water-efficient is a given; they must also “foster sustainable behaviour and product usage.”. The eight finalists hail from around the world and the projects include a fridge with compartments suited for a variety of foods; a home composter and one that will compost plastic bags; a solar-powered cooking pot and an air cleaner powered the same way; a fog shower that uses only 2 litres of water for a 5 minute shower; a combined sink and dishwasher; and a washing machine that uses soap nuts instead of detergent. Some of Philippe Rahm's new work is being exhibited in the VIA section of the Maison & Objet show in Paris which ends today. There is a very good-looking air exchanger made of wood and glass, as well as seating, lighting and heating components. The exchanger above, called Ventilation, is filled with slices of wood from trees found in the Parisian environs which perfumes the incoming air. His latest collection of seating, after the jump, is reminiscent of the beach: lifeguard chairs of varying heights and a low chair to set in the sand. Put all together, the parts make up a very serene sum.

They’re a huge hit in Italy, over 10,000 watches sold in the first 10 days and half a million in the first year of distribution. The waterproof version was just released this past September. The Too Late Watch is the most simplistic of simple timepieces with nothing more than a monochrome digital readout. Hell, it doesn’t even have an alarm function but it does come in a bazillion colors.
According to our trend hunters, Italian urbanites are wearing 2, even 3 of them together. One for each time zone perhaps? School kids have them in their school colors and college kids are doing their best to support their favorite soccer times.

We are surrounded by various tools. We usually believe that a spoon is tool for eating something and a comb is for combing someoneユs hair. But don't they have other purposes?
Let's explore in a house at midnight !
There are tools on a tabletop in moonlight. If you touch one softly, the shadow transforms into various shapes. Even if tools don't change own shape, their shadows may show their true characters.
